How VAT works

VAT (Value Added Tax) is a tax added to most goods and services in the UK. The standard rate is 20%, with a 5% reduced rate and a 0% zero rate for certain items. A net price is the figure before VAT; a gross price is the figure with VAT included.

To add VAT, multiply the net figure by one plus the rate. At 20%, multiply by 1.20, so £100 net becomes £120 gross. To remove it, divide the gross by 1.20 rather than taking 20% off: £120 gross is £100 net, not £96.

Most businesses must register for VAT once taxable turnover passes £90,000 in any rolling 12-month period, the threshold since April 2024. Rates are current for 2026. This is general information, not tax advice; check gov.uk or an accountant for your own situation.
