How to work out pro rata salary

To work out a pro rata salary, take the hours (or days) you'll work as a share of a full-time week, then scale the full-time salary by that share. Pro rata just means in proportion: when a job advert lists a salary as pro rata, that number is the full-time figure, so you're paid the same rate, just for fewer hours.

That share is your full-time equivalent, or FTE. Work 26 hours against a 37.5-hour week, and your FTE is about 0.69, so you'll earn roughly 69% of the full-time salary. The hourly rate stays the same as a full-timer's, only the yearly, monthly, and weekly totals come down, because you're working fewer hours.

One thing to watch: these figures are gross, before income tax, National Insurance, and any pension, so what you see is the salary, not the take-home. Pro rata can also affect holiday and some benefits, which aren't covered here. This is general information, not financial advice.
